Each year, the Joplin Amateur Radio Club sponsors this Hamfest which has become one of the premier events in the midwest. The hamfest was expanded to two consecutive days, starting Friday evening, then all day Saturday. Started in 1990, it has been held at the John Q. Hammon’s Trade Center located off of South Range Line at I-44, in Joplin, Missouri since 1994.
Situated less than 200 miles from several major cities in four states, including Little Rock, Ft. Smith, Fayetteville, Wichita, Topeka, St. Joseph, Oklahoma City, Tulsa, Kansas City and Springfield, this hamfest has become popular with amateurs and vendors across the Middle West. This year it features over 280 tables, spacious parking with easy access, wide aisles, forums, testing, and prizes.
With the changes in the licensing requirements, the hamfest now offers two VE testing sessions, Friday evening and Saturday. You must pre-register for the Friday test session to be guaranteed a seat. Email Ray Brown firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve your seat for the Friday test session.
The Hamfest opens at 3 PM Friday afternoon and runs until 9 PM. This Early Bird opening of the Hamfest features an old fashioned brat and burger cookout from 5 PM to 7 PM. Refreshments are available, but sold separately. Ane evening VE test session is offered, and there are prize drawings held througout the evening.
Saturday, the doors open at 8 AM, with prize drawings and forums throughout the day. On Saturday, the Exchange Club of Joplin has donuts, coffee, sandwiches, and refreshments available.
Drawings for door prizes are made throughout the event on Saturday. All door prizes drawn (both days) can be claimed up to the end of the hamfest Saturday. Drawing tickets must be presented to win all prizes! If you leave, give your tickets to a trusted friend to claim your prizes for you. The final prize drawings will be held just after NOON on Saturday. Only the grand prize drawings will be repeated until someone claims them.
Commercial vendors are encouraged to download and submit their reservation form and return it with payment to insure they are guaranteed space. Pre-registration payment offers the advantage of getting your business listed in the flyer and on the website.
The list of vendors shown on the website includes links when provided. These vendors have come from all over the Middle West to participate and support our event. We encourage our attendees to patronize them.
HAMS are also encouraged to bring their families and spend the weekend discovering the rich history of the Ozark area playground located all around our town! Information and maps are available at the Hamfest about several area attractions and area events held Saturday. The Holiday Inn (next door) offers special room rates for hamfest attendees, which also includes breakfast!
Some of the attractions include the Wildcat Glades Conservation & Audubon Center, the Spiva Art Museum, Richardson’s Chocolate Factory, SandStone Gardens, and the Joplin Museum Complex – where you can discover the colorful lead and zinc mining history of this area. The new Downstream Casino Resort located just minutes away.
